“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler” — Albert Einstein*

In 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus turned the scientific world on its head with his new model of the solar system. Previous models placed the Earth at the center of the universe, with planets and stars orbiting in complex irregular paths that required intense calculations to predict their movement. The geocentric models fit the data, but provided little insight.

Then, with the simple change in perspective to place the Sun in the center, with all planets orbiting around it, Copernicus produced a model that provided comparable levels of accuracy, with radical simplicity, kickstarting a revolution in our understanding of the mechanics of the planets and stars.

Nearly 500 years later, it is easy to fall into the same trap of building ever more complex and precise models without stopping to understand the ‘why’ of it all.

At Copernican Consulting, we combine rigorous quantitative analysis and modeling skills, the spirit of the scientific method, and deep business experience to distill complex problems into actionable solutions.

As Simply As Possible

*What Einstein actually said was “It can scarcely be denied that the supreme goal of all theory is to make the irreducible basic elements as simple and as few as possible without having to surrender the adequate representation of a single datum of experience”…but we think he would approve of the simplified version.
